My Number Card Guide
Foreign residents with mid- to long-term status (over 3 months) receive a 12-digit My Number after registering at a city hall. By applying, you can also get a My Number Card. It makes life in Japan much more convenient.

Difference: My Number vs My Number Card

  • My Number (12-digit number): everyone registered automatically receives it
  • My Number Card: a physical ID with photo and IC chip. You must apply

How to Apply (4 Methods)

1. Apply by Smartphone (easiest)

  1. Wait for your “My Number Card Application Form” from the city hall (auto-mailed after arrival)
  2. Scan the QR code on the form with your phone
  3. Take your face photo with the phone
  4. Enter your information and submit
  5. About 1 month later, the city hall sends a “Pickup Notice”
  6. Pick up the card at the city hall

2. Apply on PC

Upload your photo and enter information on the My Number Card application website.

3. Apply by Mail

Attach a photo to the application form and mail it.

4. Apply at a Photo Booth

Some photo booths have a “My Number Card Application” button. Take and submit your photo on the spot.

What You Need at Pickup

  • Pickup notice (sent by the city hall)
  • Notification card or Individual Number Notice (if you have it)
  • ID (Residence Card, Passport, etc.)
  • Decide 4 PINs in advance (signature, user verification, Juminhyo basic ledger, and card face input support)

Switching to Myna Health Insurance Card

Benefits

  • No need to reissue the insurance card
  • Faster hospital reception
  • High-cost medical expense cap applied automatically without a certificate
  • Doctors can check drug interactions more easily

How to Switch

  1. Bring your My Number Card to a hospital
  2. Place it on the “Myna Insurance Card Reader” at reception
  3. Verify with face recognition or 4-digit PIN
  4. Done. Next time, just tap the card

What You Can Do at Convenience Stores

With your My Number Card and 4-digit PIN, use 7-Eleven, Lawson, and FamilyMart copiers to get:

  • Juminhyo (Certificate of Residence)
  • Certificate with registered items
  • Inkan registration certificate
  • Koseki tohon / shohon (some municipalities)
  • Income and tax certificates

Fee: 200 to 300 yen per copy (same as or cheaper than at the city hall)

Hours: 6:30 to 23:00 (during convenience store hours)
